Tips To Attract More Wildlife To Your Garden

One of the best things about having an orangery or conservatory is being able to sit in a sheltered, light-filled space, while enjoying uninterrupted views of your garden. Many people find this is a relaxing and therapeutic way to spend time, and enjoy the beauty of nature, whatever the season.

No doubt at this time of year, many of us are busy getting the garden shipshape for summer. Lawns will be mown, patios will be cleaned, and borders will be weeded and pruned ready for the summer blooms. Another way to add interest to your garden, as well as to help maintain the biodiversity of the local ecosystem, is to attract more wildlife.

There are some really simple ways to make a difference. The Woodland Trust recommends choosing native species of flowers, such as forget-me-not, foxglove, and chamomile. These plants will draw bees and butterflies, who feed on the nectar. Many non-native flowers, such as pansies, do not have enough nectar to attract pollinators.

Another great way to create a wildlife haven, as well as an attractive garden focal point, is to add a water source. This could be anything from a stone trough or a bird bath, to a pond, or even a rill. A rill is a narrow formal channel of shallow water, which can either be a decorative feature in itself, or used to direct water into a pond.

Water which is kept free from pollutants and excessive algae growth will attract amphibians, insects, and birds to your garden. Make sure at least one side is tiered or gently sloping, to allow creatures to get out of the water easily. Ideally, there should also be plants or trees nearby to provide camouflage and shelter for approaching or departing wildlife.
