When it comes to designing a conservatory, there’s lots to consider. As well as the cost, features and materials used to create your new space, you’ll also need to think about its size.
After all, the size of your conservatory will dictate what you can do with it! So how much space do you need for a conservatory? Well, it all depends on how you want to use it and how much space you have at your disposal.
In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the key considerations when choosing the size of your conservatory, so you know exactly how much space you need to create your ideal retreat.
Purpose Of Conservatory
First, when deciding how much space you need for your conservatory, you need to consider what you want to use it for.
Will you be using it solely as an office or workspace? Then you might be able to get away with one of the smallest options, in which case you probably won’t need too much space.
On the flip side, if you’re a fitness fanatic who owns loads of exercise equipment and you’re looking to use your conservatory as a home gym, a smaller construction might not cut it. In this case, more space is probably required.
Many people have a conservatory built simply to add some extra space to their home and connect the outdoors with the indoors. If you’re one of them then you can probably opt for something a little on the smaller side.
Conversely, if you’re a social butterfly who lives to host parties, or you have a large family and you’re attracted by the idea of some scenic dining in your conservatory, you’re probably going to need more space.
As you can see, the purpose of having your conservatory built will make a huge difference to how much space you require. So give this some thought before speaking to your design team as they’ll be able to advise how much space you’ll need for the functionality you’re after.
Size Of House
Next, you’ll want to think about the size of your home. After all, a conservatory will run parallel or adjacent to your home, so its size will be heavily determined by the size of your home.
If you own a small home, then building a huge conservatory on the side of it would probably look a little silly. However, if you own a large home then you’ll be free to go for something a little more substantial.
Most architects and designers work to a golden ratio of 1:1.618 as this is believed to be the most aesthetically pleasing. So for example, if the width of your home measures 28ft, which is around the average size of a house in the UK, 17ft would be the perfect size.
Again, this is something your architect can discuss when you’re building your bespoke conservatory, but to give you an idea of how much space you’ll need, a lot will depend on the size of your property.
Size Of Garden
Another consideration you need to make when you’re designing your conservatory is the size of your garden. It’s all well and good having the space around your home, but if your conservatory is going to take up a massive proportion of your garden then not only will it look bad but it’ll affect your outdoor enjoyment.
So think about how big your garden is in relation to the size of the conservatory you want. As a general rule of thumb, your conservatory should take up no more than 50 per cent of your garden. By exceeding this, you run the risk of your conservatory overwhelming your outdoor space.
Start by measuring your garden, then you should have a good idea of your size limitations. Alternatively, if you’re unsure about anything then just speak to us and we’d be happy to discuss sizes, planning and any other design-related query you have.
So those are the main considerations to make when thinking about the size of a conservatory. As well as the purpose of your conservatory and what you want to get out of it, you’ll also need to think about the size of your home and garden, to ensure it looks right and doesn’t overwhelm its surroundings.
